External modem will not work because UART chip is not 16550 or higher

Cause:

UART chip is not 16550 or higher.

Solution:

Replace the UART chip with a higher speed chip.

CAUTION: A qualified computer technician should perform the installation of a chip within the computer.

The 16550 chip is a standard in most IBM PS/2 and 386 computers, as well as practically all 486 and above computers. If unsure, contact your computer manufacturer.
